Hey, I'm Jake Baker.
Aerospace
I started as an aerospace engineer, first at a startup and then at the largest aerospace company in the world, so I have seen both ends of corporate life. What I liked most, it turned out, was the accounting, the finances and the budgets.
Real estate
Then real estate took over. I wanted to know how people build generational wealth with it, so I went and did it. I house hacked my first property in Long Beach, California. A year later I started investing out of state in Jacksonville, Florida, and after a successful first flip I went full time, ran a large-scale flipping company for years, wholesaled alongside it, and moved back to my hometown of San Diego. I still invest in North Florida and Southern California: long-term, mid-term and short-term co-living rentals, most of them bought through the BRRRR method and off-market strategies.
Lessons learned: my BRRRR horror story, the Jacksonville deal that ended at a loss, and what it taught me.
BookkeepingRE
Early in that journey I needed a bookkeeper. Within a year and a half I had hired and fired three. Some were fine at getting the books ready for taxes, but none could show me financials I could run the business on, and good ones were hard to find, so I started doing the books myself. Over the next several years I took on other flippers as clients to help them out. The demand for good real estate bookkeeping was obvious, I knew the field, and I loved the accounting, so in 2023 I went all in, and that became BookkeepingRE. We keep your books for two readers: your tax preparer, so filing is simple, and you, so the numbers help you decide. We know what a rehab draw, a refinance or an intercompany transfer looks like, because we have done them. And because of my engineering background, we lean heavily on software automation and artificial intelligence to deliver the best result for our investors.
